Thanks Chris. I wish I could say it was totally original. It really is right out of The Sparrow — in a nutshell, SETI discovers music emanating from a nearby planetary system, and the Jesuits send the first spaceship. The results are not disconnected from the history of the Jesuits — a great read, btw.

When I first heard the comments from the Vatican’s astronomer-priest yesterday my instant reaction was: “They know something. Those gits know something. Or some news is about to break and they want to cover themselves beforehand.”

Sadly, I think it’s just wishful thinking on my behalf. I bet they don’t really know anything at all and they just wanted to tie in a press release with the new X-Files movie.
