The Windigo of Frigheim IX
-- a speculative fiction by Emily Chesley

..page 6..

Jugg had worsened from his injuries the day before and it looked as though he would perish, but the next morning he was awake before the rest of the survivors, his mortal wounds miraculously healed and ready to renew the hike to the south. Mysteriously, the bones of Bogo's body had been picked clean, though his head, which was frozen solid and bonded to the floor of the cavern with ice, was untouched.original artwork commissioned for the story

Leila suspected the worst, and Jeremy confirmed it when he drew her aside from the others; at first Leila was expecting another in Jeremy's endless series of indecent proposals, but instead he said: "there must be prodigious restorative effects in the flesh of our companions. Not to mention strength. It is the only thing that can account for the Fetish's survival and the beast's power." Benjorn could hear neither this conversation, nor the psychodynamic repartee between the Fetish twins, so he was utterly confused when the twins attacked Jeremy with rocks.

Leila understood that the Fetishes planned to consume Jeremy, and so, his own strength. With this and their psychodynamic abilities to work in perfect tandem, there would be no defeating them. Jeremy's penetrating digits were no help to him as the telepathic twins beat him with rocks the size of a malamute's head. Seeing the doom of both herself and Benjorn in the stoning of Jeremy, the resilient sub-commander called to her paramour to help defend the cowardly Brit. Jigg, perhaps reading Leila's mind, wacked her with his weapon, and Leila fell into a swoon.

Benjorn launched himself into the battle with psychopathic jealousy, quickly incapacitating Jigg by turning his head around 360 degrees. The crunching sound was quite sickening and Jugg survived his brother only a few seconds, as the psychodynamic trauma of Jigg's cranial revolution echoed in his mind. While stunned, the cowardly Jeremy poked his obscenely elongated index finger into Jugg's left eye, straight through to the housing of Jugg's mentality. Jeremy collapsed in agony from his severe beating, and Benjorn went to his Leila, weeping manfully as he thought her dead.
